NCTE Affiliate Journal of Excellence Award

Award Details

Purpose
The purpose of this award is to honor outstanding affiliate journals and their editors and to encourage excellence in these publications. Journals selected represent models for affiliate journals to emulate.

Who Can Participate
Any affiliate of NCTE which has published at least one issue of a journal from May of the previous year through the program deadline on June 30 of the year of the award is eligible to submit its publication for consideration for the award.

Definition of a Journal
Publication by an affiliate of a magazine-type production which includes scholarly articles on issues and topics related to English language arts. It is usually published on an annual or semi-annual basis, although some may be published quarterly. The primary purpose of the magazine is to focus on instruction of English language arts and related topics. Publications that primarily focus on affiliate news and activities are to be considered newsletters and entered in that competition.

Frequency/Number of Awards
Outstanding journals will be selected and recognized as Journals of Excellence at the Affiliate Breakfast at each year’s NCTE Annual Convention.

Award Specifics
Certificates will be presented to each winning affiliate in the categories of “print journal” and “online-only” journal.

Criteria
Affiliates nominate themselves for this award by submitting four copies of one issue of their journal or by providing online access to their electronic journal and completing the Affiliate Journal Award submission form. The journal issue being submitted should have been published between May 1 of previous year and June 30 of the year of award. Affiliates nominating a print journal may also upload a PDF version of the journal on the submission form in lieu of mailing hardcopies of the journal.

Submissions will be judged on the criteria listed below (updated in 2022):

The affiliate publishes well-supported, scholarly articles based on exploration of current and/or seminal professional literature, professional experiences, and/or classroom research that may include recommendations for best practices and professional development opportunities.

The affiliate incorporates a variety of content into their journal: pedagogical articles, teaching stories, affiliate news, book reviews, poetry, etc.
The affiliate publishes content from a variety of authors with varied backgrounds and educational contexts. The affiliate provides biographical information for each author.
The affiliate journal appeals to a diverse audience of varying teaching assignments, grade levels, and/or experience within the affiliate.
The affiliate incorporates the purposeful use of graphics that artfully organize the space, guide the reader’s eye, and enhance the presentation of ideas and information from cover to cover.
The affiliate designs their layout through a consistent typography for copy and headlines that meets professional standards. The title of the journal, the name of the affiliate, affiliate board members, issue/volume numbers, and editors are clearly identifiable.
The affiliate creates a call for manuscripts that focuses on a theme related to a current, important issue in ELA education and invites a variety of authors from different educational contexts. They provides specific selection criteria and a clear selection process.
The affiliate creates a cohesive journal by selecting manuscripts that support and enhance the thematic topic.
The affiliate publishes well-written and well-organized pieces that have an engaging voice and clear purpose.
The affiliate edits their journal so the entire publication is error-free and follows a consistent formatting style (MLA or APA).

Scoring Rubric (updated in 2022)

Submissions and Deadline
All submitters must complete the Affiliate Journal Award submission form. Four copies of one issue of the affiliate’s print journal must be postmarked and mailed to the NCTE Affiliate Office, 340 N. Neil St., #104, Champaign, IL 61820. These must be postmarked/submitted no later than June 30 of year of the award. The completed online submission form is all that is required for online journals. If affiliates send more than one issue of the journal for judging, the contest chair will randomly select the issue to be judged; all other issues will not be included in the judging. Affiliates nominating a print journal may also upload a PDF version of the journal on the submission form in lieu of mailing hardcopies of the journal.

The winning affiliate(s) will be notified in late summer so that they may have a representative present to receive the award at the NCTE Annual Convention Affiliate Breakfast. This representative is expected to purchase a breakfast ticket with conference registration.

Administration
The NCTE Standing Committee on Affiliates will administer the award. The Committee will appoint a member to handle the judging, the award’s specifics, and notification to applicants. The committee will also provide annual feedback on ways to improve the program so that it runs smoothly. The NCTE Affiliate Office will handle the initial publicity and notification to affiliates of the program.

Judging
Each Affiliate Journal Award submission form will be independently evaluated.
