Each February since 1990, NCTE’s National African American Read-In (AARI) has brought together students, teachers, families, and communities from all corners of the US to read books and celebrate literacy during Black History Month.
More than six million people have participated in the AARI since it was established by the Black Caucus of NCTE; many schools and organizations have been participating for decades. This year, hundreds of events are planned for classrooms and other gathering spots across the country.
Books are at the heart of any Read-In, no matter where it takes place. Consider celebrating #AARI26 with the titles below—all are winners of NCTE’s 2026 Children’s Book and Poetry Awards. You can peruse these titles and more at our 2026 African American Read-In list on Bookshop.org. Titles are being added regularly.
