Individual Membership
LLA membership is $25 a year for NCTE members, $75 a year for nonmembers, and includes a subscription to the LLA journal Talking Points.
Talking Points helps promote literacy research and the use of whole language instruction in classrooms. It provides a forum for parents, classroom teachers, and researchers to reflect about literacy and learning. Published semiannually in October and May.
Unique advantages for individual members:
- A subscription to the LLA journal Talking Points as well as online access to all NCTE journals in the archives that are over two years old.
- Discount registration fees to attend the LLA Literacies for All Summer Institute and the NCTE Annual Convention.
- Voting rights in elections for the LLA Executive Board and NCTE offices.
- Access to and discounts on LLA/NCTE books, journals, and meetings.
- Eligibility to make nominations for the LLA Awards.
- Access to online resources and communities maintained by LLA and NCTE.
Group Membership
Teachers Applying Whole Language (TAWL) groups provide individual members, usually from the same geographical area, a local network for their interest in whole language. Click here to see if there is group in your area.
Unique advantages for TAWL group members:
- A subscription to the LLA journal, Talking Points
(one subscription per group through the group’s contact person) - Voting privileges at the Delegates Assembly meeting at the LLA Literacies for All Summer Institute (each TAWL group member, as evidenced by the membership roster of a current TAWL group, is entitled to one vote)
- Ability to obtain tax-exempt status for the group through the NCTE.
- Use of the LLA logo on TAWL publications and conference materials.
- Invitation to attend the LLA Executive Board meetings at the LLA Literacies for All Summer Institute and at the NCTE Annual Convention.
- Access to online resources and communities maintained by LLA and NCTE.
Join/Start a TAWL Group:
A minimum of five members is required to form a TAWL group. One member, usually the group contact person, must be an individual member of LLA/NCTE. TAWL Group membership in LLA is $25.00 per group.
To start a TAWL group, print out, complete, and mail the TAWL Group Enrollment Form with your payment to 1111 W. Kenyon Road, Urbana, IL 61801-1096.
